Abstract

An ACPD method has been developed as an NDT technique that canaccurately characterize surface breaking fatigue cracks in metal specimens. Single fatiguecracks that were initiated and propagated in different specimens were considered. TheACPD system was sensitive (capable of detecting fatigue crack increments as small as 45microns) and able to discriminate skew cracks from 15 to 90 degrees, as well as fatiguecracks of variable aspect ratio. Finally, the effects, on ACPD detectability, of stress acrossthe crack, where electrical crack wake closure may play a role, was also considered, together with the potential for industrial application.
