Abstract

The paper presents a probabilistically based damage model for textile reinforced
composites in the framework of continuum damage mechanics, where damage is defined
as the change of the tensor of elasticity. Damage variables are introduced to describe the
evolution of the damage state and subsequently the degradation of the material stiffness.
New probabilistic failure criterion considers different composite failure modes as well as
further fracture types influenced by the textile reinforcement. Additional questions
regarding the experimental and numerical validation are presented in part II of the paper.
