Abstract

The aim of this work is the prediction of high-cycle fatigue behaviour in welded joints. Use of the maximum stress obtained from an elastic FEA results in a very conservative
estimate of the fatigue limit that cannot be used in practice. Some new methods were recently developed [1] and applied to steel welded joints: the Crack Modelling Method and the . In this paper those methods are extended to aluminium alloy welded joints. Specimens with different geometries (cruciform, T shaped, butt welds), dimensions and aluminium alloys were considered. The
experimental fatigue limits were taken from the literature [2, 3]. In particular T-shaped welded joints, made of AlMg4.5Mn aluminium alloy and applied in ship structures,
were analysed. Their fatigue limit was defined following the staircase procedure. The experimental values of the different welded joints were compared with those obtained from the numerical analysis, evaluated according the new methodologies. Good predictions were achieved using all the methods. Then the T welded joints were drilled with a passing hole through the welded and base materials. Their fatigue limit was defined following the staircase procedure and the fracture surfaces were analyzed using the SEM.
