Abstract

Some fractures occurred on a 26 MW steam turbine at the LP rotor last stage blades and lacing wire. A
considerable erosion due to liquid impingement of blade trailing and leading edges was also noticed.
A failure analysis allowed us to establish that the high-cyclic fatigue is the damage mechanism for the two
components, blades and lacing wire. The cause was found to be the high vibrations due to the presence of
water at the drain during the turbine start-up. The presence of water has also caused the erosion
phenomena.
