Abstract

The Virtual Fields Method (VFM) is an inverse method which allows to identify the mechanical
properties of material starting from full-field measurements. Thanks to its adaptability it has been applied to
several fields of mechanical engineering as, for instance, the identification of the stiffness of composites, the
vibration analysis and, recently, the elasto-plasticity. The aim of this paper is using the VFM and full-field
measurements to identify the plastic zone close to the crack tip. The potentiality and the limits of the method
are investigated with simulated experiments which reproduce the measurement of the deformation fields close
to the crack in a standard CT-test. Different spatial resolutions and noise levels were taken into account.
