Electrochemical Deposition of Calcium Phosphate for Implant Osseointegration and Drug Release

Abstract


electrochemical deposition of Calcium Phosphate (Ca/P) coatings on Titaniumbaseddevices. A one pot process for ion doping of coatings and co-deposition ofdrugs was exploited, with the aim to trigger specific biological responses.Ca/P coatings were performed on Ti specimens via cathodic polarization route inan electrochemical bath originally proposed by Redepenning. For this study, theoriginal solution was modified by adding Mg3O8P2·8H2O, MgHPO4·3H2O orAg3PO4. The obtained coatings were evaluated in terms of morphologicalproperties, crystallographic phases and solubility. Results showed an effectiveincorporation of Mg or Ag ions in brushite coatings, without any major effects onmorphology or cristallinity of the coatings. On the contrary, some effect ondeposition kinetic was noticed. Moreover, dissolution kinetic behaviour was alsostudied in physiological-like environments for both as deposited and convertedcoatings, showing a different dissolution rate depending on crystallographicphase.Cathodic polarization was found a simple and powerful method to obtain bonecontact surface tailored coatings.
